By HMT.IN - "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge (...)" - Declared the Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehruji at the stroke of midnight of August 14, 1974 as India attained independence. This led to a phase of vigorous initiatives in agriculture, industry, infrastructure and other such core sectors to make independent India self-reliant.

HMT Limited, formerly Hindustan Machine Tools Limited, is a state-owned holding company under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in India.

In 1961, HMT set up a watch manufacturing Unit at Bangalore in collaboration with Citizen Watch Co., Japan. As the first manufacturer of wrist watches in the country. The most popular mechanical hand-wound watch is HMT Janata, there are also other mechanical watches like HMT Pilot, Jhalak (semi Skeletal), Sona and Braile.

Popularity and demand for HMT watches was increasing day by day. So, in 1972, HMT expanded its watch manufacturing capacity with a set up alongside the Bangalore factory to manufacture additional watches such a as automatic day date with Japanese technology.

In 1975, the same watch factory was further expanded to manufacture main spring, hair spring and shock absorber components. With this, HMT completely acquired the technology of mechanical watch making, producing 100% components in house.

Later, HMT set up additional manufacturing facilities to produce 2 million watch component sets at Tumkur (in 1978) and Ranibagh (in 1985) and watches were assembled at various assembly units spread over the country. The watch factory at Tumkur was partially converted to manufacture quartz analog watches in collaboration with Citizen Watch Co., Japan. Also, to cater to the niche market, a specialized watch case manufacturing facility was set up at Bangalore in 1983.

Since 1985, HMT Watches had been involved in making floral clocks, solar clocks, international clocks and tower clocks, most popular among them being the garden clock in Bangalore.

In 2000, HMT Watch business group was re-structured as HMT Watches Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of HMT Limited.

"HMT Watches, having over 100 million customers, is a household name in the country and enjoys a good Brand Equity."

Vintage watches are traditionally smaller than today's watches. Men's watches typically measure between 29-36mm (some larger, some smaller) wide excluding the crown. In the listing details we typically try to do our best to list all pertinent dimensions of a watch. If you don't see it, or we failed to do so, please reach out to us. Women's watches from the 1900s-1970s were also somewhat smaller than today’s offerings in many cases. Please also feel free to ask any questions you have pertaining to size.

We prefer to shoot photographs outside when weather is permitting. However, when we shoot indoors, please be aware that we shoot our photographs inside of lightboxes that are lit with 360 LED bulbs. This indeed magnifies any flaws. Usually, they are much less obvious to the naked eye. Having said that, we never photoshop any of our photography, remove blemishes, etc. We adjust light, when necessary, but what you see is what you are getting, and we take pride in that.

The condition is pre-owned.
The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended.
See all the photos, feel free to ask questions if you have any.
